Well here it is our blog for our 2014 adventure - the adventure down under in Australia. We, Sean, Krystin, Matthew and Kade Rennie, are heading to Australia for a year. The adventure starts before we actually get to where we will live. We are heading to New Zealand on Christmas day for a little family vacation then off to the east coast of Australia before settling in Falcon in Western Australia. We will be about an hour south of Perth on the Indian Ocean. So stay tuned as we plan to post often to keep our family and friends up to date on our adventure.

In Prison This Weekend

This past Saturday we decided to head up to Fremantle, one of our favourite places, to tour the prison.  This particular prison has significance in the development of Western Australia.  When the first convicts were send from Britain in 1850, usually sentenced to Australia for petty crimes such as stealing bread or livestock, they were sent to Fremantle and required to actually build the prison they were sentenced to. The Prison was built between 1852 to 1859 using the limestone quarry on the site.  In the 1890's the Fremantle Prison became the colony's primary place of confinement for all of WA.  This prison was up and running until 1991and would believe never had plumbing the cells - they had pots for their toilets and had to clean them out everyday.

convicts came in too.

Weekend Road Trip - Dwellingup

So it was a Sunday August 17th and we had no plans but it felt weird hanging around the house on such a nice day.  So we jumped in the car with no particular destination in mind and headed north then east and ended up in Dwellingup.  This is a great mountain biking area so we figured out where the best trails were for our next visit and ended up going for a hike to check out the Marrinup Falls and Prisoners of War (POW) camp.

This POW camp was established during WW II to house prisoners of war captured by the British.  It opened in 1943 and held Italians and Germans. Their job was to collect firewood for the Perth Metropolitan area as well as help local farmers.

Kade Turns 10 Down Under

So this is first time Kade has ever had his birthday while in school and in the winter (if you can call this weather winter) definitely no snow!!!  Kade requested an Australian themed birthday cake and we decide to include the animals he has seen on this trip as part of the cake.  He also had a sleep over with lots of trips to the skate park for scootering.  Still cannot believe he is 10!!!

Geraldton

I have not posted for some time and thought that this was a good time to get caught up. We stopped in Geraldton on our way home for our northern holiday in July.  We spent the day exploring and enjoyed a visit to the museum.  We also checked a couple more beaches long the coast. I don't think we will ever be sick of the sea!!!
