This past Saturday we decided to head up to Fremantle, one of our favourite places, to tour the prison. This particular prison has significance in the development of Western Australia. When the first convicts were send from Britain in 1850, usually sentenced to Australia for petty crimes such as stealing bread or livestock, they were sent to Fremantle and required to actually build the prison they were sentenced to. The Prison was built between 1852 to 1859 using the limestone quarry on the site. In the 1890's the Fremantle Prison became the colony's primary place of confinement for all of WA. This prison was up and running until 1991and would believe never had plumbing the cells - they had pots for their toilets and had to clean them out everyday.
