Well here it is our blog for our 2014 adventure - the adventure down under in Australia. We, Sean, Krystin, Matthew and Kade Rennie, are heading to Australia for a year. The adventure starts before we actually get to where we will live. We are heading to New Zealand on Christmas day for a little family vacation then off to the east coast of Australia before settling in Falcon in Western Australia. We will be about an hour south of Perth on the Indian Ocean. So stay tuned as we plan to post often to keep our family and friends up to date on our adventure.

Jurien Bay Weekend

This weekend we headed north to Jurien Bay, about 3 1/2 hours north of Perth.  This was our first time camping in Australia.  We arrived at around 9 pm and headed to our camp site which was a little sketchy so we made our way to a nice one on the water and Sean did his magic and got us a site at a camp ground that was full!!! We had some technical difficulties putting up the tent- no tent pegs- but Sean MacGyver did his thing and rigged the tent so we could sleep. It was a cloudy weekend but still warm.  We really liked the water front and the old wooden jetty.

We visited the Sandy Capes Recreational Centre.  This is a huge area full of sand dunes and we did a little sand boarding and sliding.  The Kids and car were filled with sands after this event.

I convinced the family to get up early, 6 am, to go the Pinnacles Desert. I was told that the lighting was best at dawn or dusk and there might be kangaroos.  This place was really cool, a very different landscape than what we have seen so far. No kangaroos but we did see an Emu. The Pinnacles Desert is in the Nambung National Park and covers over 17,000 hectares.  These limestone pillars were formed 25,000 to 30,000 years ago after the Indian Ocean winds eroded the surrounding sand, leaving the limestone pillars exposed.

The sand is mustard yellow - it really is amazing landscape

The Emu we stocked

So we learned our lesson on Sunday about making sure we always have fuel.  We went to the Pinnacles in the morning with a 1/4 tank of gas with the goal of getting gas after our tour in a small town just down the highway.  Well we got there and they had no power so the pumps were not working so we headed back to Jurien Bay except they had run out of fuel.  That is right no fuel in the town until Monday afternoon. So the nice gentlemen on the lot beside our campsite gave us 5 litres of gas to get to an out of town gas station.  We ended up heading north about 25 kilometres since the power was still not on in the other town.  We lucked out and got gas but was told that they would probably run out in less than an hour!!  We were almost stranded!! I WILL always get gas when the indicator hits the half full mark!!!!!

We then headed south and explored the coast on our way home.

This is a massive sand dune - a mobile dune
these sand dunes have no vegetation and are moving in a
northerly direction due to the South-West on-shore breezes.
It moves about 12 metres a year.

Another great weekend.  Spent most of it at Sue and Lawrie's place in Yallingup.  Did head out for a tour of the Margaret River area also.

Sculpture by the Sea......

This past Wednesday was an outing with Tanya and Michelle.  We headed to an outdoor exhibition of art at Cottesloe Beach in Perth - Sculpture by the Sea.  It was a beautiful day filled with good food, art, shopping and fun.

Tanya, Krystin & Michelle enjoying breakfast at the beach

Sculpture by the Sea is basically an outdoor art show on the beach. It was really fun to hang out at the beach and enjoy local and international art work.

Permanent Sunset - Argentina
This was cool because from this angle the string looked like a sunset
Off Shore Trading - New South Wales, Australia - I was not sure how to take the statement that accompanied this art
"Beach sand from Canada?" Absurd, yet it could be true."  I was not sure if they meant Canada does not have sand
or it would be crazy to ship it here for this event??????

Wave 1 - Western Australia - once you got up close to this sculpture
you noticed that this wave was made of blonde Barbies

150 surfboard graveyard - New South Whales

Overconsumption - Western Australia
this was made of plastic milk containers and lids

We Caught Crabs in Mandurah.....

Ok so a big thing in Mandurah and Falcon where we are living is crabbing.  In the estuary just down the street we can go and catch crabs.  So we were lucking enough to get taken out with Beau and Michelle Davey and Mike Staples and caught some fresh crabs.  It is quite an experience - you put on your water shoes, grab a flash light and a net and off you go into the water in the dark!!!

Kade catches a crab with the help of Beau and Dad

Cooked crab - taste good just cooked with bread and butter
we also made crab cakes - yummy!

So crabbing is a big thing here that they have a whole weekend to celebrate crabs - Mandurah Crabfest - tons of stuff to do, see and eat - there was an extreme sports event, including skate boarding, wake boarding and scootering (which Kade loved and I think took some notes!!), vendors and we enjoyed lots of good food.
